  MAP TO DOWNTOWN
State street is the "main drag"
in downtown Santa Barbara.

It begins at the beach at the famous "Dolphin Fountain" created by local artist Bud Bottoms, and runs north by northwest for about four miles and then turns west in upper Santa Barbara.

The main visitor area is the first mile or so from the beach to the Arlington Theater. As you proceed from the beach, the first mile is focused on beach activities.

After going under the 101 freeway, the next half dozen blocks have a concentration of local restaurants and watering holes where much of the crowd hangs out. Further on, past Cota Street, the focus is more on shopping and sidewalk restaurants.

The main mall with nationally known retailers is "Paseo Nuevo" beginning at Cota Street and extending to Canon Perdito street.

A frequent visitor often seen on State Street is the owner of this dog with a cat riding on it's back with mice in turn riding on the cats back. They all get along just beautifully. They could teach us humans something!
